Bologna meeting report

Bologna meeting report

Welcome foreign partners and video realization
Before the beginning of the Meeting, the attendant foreign Partners of the project (M. Braic and D. Forleo Monopoli) are interviewed by a professional crew (coordinated by the IOR Communications and Media Relations Office) about their research activities and the activities they will carry out within the project. The audiovideo images will be used for the realization of a professional informative video of the project, together with the interviews to the other participants and the video images acquired during the meeting.

Updates
Dr. Fini welcomes Partners and Participants attending the Meeting. Project and milestones are briefly summarized with particular regard to milestones and deliverables related to the first year of activity.
Dr. Fini updates all on the activities aimed at promoting the dissemination of the project, as already anticipated in communications via e-mail. The Project leaflet is presented to the participants for their final approval. It will be distributed at scientific meeting and during the event “The Night of Researchers” scheduled in Bologna for the end of September. Project partners are invited to do the same at meetings or scientific events in their Countries.
The progress of the project’s website (www.nano-vertebra.org), which is now active, is also shown.
In particular, it is highlighted that any type of update related to the project (scientific publications, participation to congresses, meetings etc) will be published in the “News” section and all Partners are invited to share with the project coordinator the information which can be uploaded to the website.
In this regard, it is also recalled the importance, for the purposes of the final scientific report of the project, of reporting the correct project acknowledgement when data generated with support from EuroNanoMed III will be published: “The project is supported by (name of funding organization, or an acknowledgement as required by your national funding organization), under the frame of EuroNanoMed III”.
In consideration of a punctual delivery of the annual reports relating to the activities carried out by the project, the Partners are requested to send their reports with adequate advance compared to the deadlines.

Partners presentations and scientific activities
Each Participant at the meeting is invited to present the own institution and activities, illustrating their field of expertise and skills.
As foreseen by the project, the first phases of activity should be focused on the realization of the coatings of the materials being studied. These activities primarily involve NABI Laboratory (IOR) and INOE. The reproducibility of the coatings to be made and the translationality of the models are discussed. In particular, the methods used to perform the coatings, and the thickness of the film are considered critical points. INOE group and NABI Laboratory will collaborate in the phase of material preparation to find a common coating strategy.
At the meeting, Dr. Braic provides 40 metallic samples, of different composition and dimension, for coatings with silver and BHA by NABI laboratory.
After the coatings performed by NABI Laboratory, the samples will be sent to INOE Institute for physico-chemical analyses and mechanical tests, to select the best candidates for cytotoxicity tests that will be performed by LSPC Laboratory (IOR).
Sample dimensions suitable for in vitro biological studies are also defined (0,5-10 mm diameter, 1-5 mm thickness).
Selected coated materials (on the basis of mechanical and chemico-physical tests) will be tested for cytotoxicity in vitro to select the best candidates to be used for subsequent studies.
Once assessed the best coatings after in vitro tests, ITC will provide metallic samples with proper topography and porosity for coatings and subsequent studies of bioactivity in vitro.
In order to obtain a geometry and a design as much as possible suitable for the anatomical site to be treated, Dr. Girolami (Spine Surgery prevalently Oncologic and Degenerative)  reports an overview of the clinical experiences. Dr. Girolami is available to provide the imaging materials on its department’s case studies to obtain images useful for prototyping. This activity will be carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory of Movement Analysis and Functional-Clinical Evaluation of Prosthesis (IOR).
A pre-screening is foreseen on a minimum number of materials supplied by INOE and ITC groups before starting mass production.
LSPC and NABI laboratories provide participants with useful information for the purposes of the project based on previous studies of antibacterial coatings of materials then tested in vitro.
In view of the two in vivo studies foreseen by the project (evaluation of the antibacterial effectiveness and of the implanted custom prototype) it is agreed to carry out the first phases of the project as soon as possible, in particular the development of the coatings, to have time to perform all the in vitro tests scheduled and to attend to all the paperwork related to ethics committees and other authorizations. The informative video will be shared with all the project partners as soon as it is ready.

Conclusion
It is assumed that the next plenary meeting could be organized in March-April 2020, compatibly with the commitments and activities of the individual participants.
